No time to hedge our bets

Buy organic and save Britain's hedgerows.

This morning, BBC Breakfast News reported on the decline of hedgerows in our countryside.

How important is this? Well, very.

'Over 600 plant species, 1500 insects, 65 birds and 20 mammals have been recorded at some time living or feeding in hedgerows', according to the English Hedgerow Trust. 'Over 100 species of invertebrates can be found in a typical 20-metre section of hedgerow... and hedgerows are particularly important for butterflies and moths, farmland birds, bats and dormice'.

'Hedgerows also act as wildlife corridors for many species... they often afford the only cover for wildlife over huge areas of countryside'.

By buying organic, you protect our hedgerows. As well as minimising the use of chemicals, keeping soil fertile and supporting fair trade among us humans, organic farming maintains these wild spaces. It has to, because organic agriculture depends on looking after a diverse, natural ecosystem.

Why not find out more about the importance of buying organic, free-range and Fairtrade?
